Ilegal Mezcal

Ilegal Mezcal has a story that’s as bold as the spirit itself. It all began back in 2006 when John Rexer, the owner of Café No Sé in Antigua, Guatemala, started smuggling mezcal from Oaxaca, Mexico, to supply his bar. This daring origin inspired the name “Ilegal,” capturing the brand’s rebellious and unconventional roots. What began as a risky way to fill shelves has grown into a celebrated name in the world of mezcal, known for its authenticity and edge.

At its core, Ilegal Mezcal is all about tradition. Produced in Oaxaca with 100% sustainably harvested agave, the mezcal is crafted using age-old methods—roasting agave in underground pits, natural fermentation, and small-batch distillation. This meticulous process creates the smoky, rich flavour that mezcal enthusiasts love. Beyond the spirit, Ilegal is dedicated to sustainability and supporting local communities, making it a brand with substance and soul.

Ilegal Mezcal has become a favourite in top bars and among mixologists in the UK. Its depth of flavour and heritage make it a standout, whether served neat or cocktails. This August, Ilegal will join forces with the Mexican collective at Cocktails in the City’s 10th-anniversary celebration, alongside Café Pacifico, 1910 Cantina, and Mezcalito. Together, they’ll spotlight the vibrant flavours and traditions of Mexican spirits, offering guests an immersive and unforgettable experience.

From its rebellious beginnings to its rise as a globally celebrated brand, Ilegal Mezcal is more than just a spirit—it’s a story, a tradition, and a celebration of Mexican culture. Raise a glass to the perfect blend of craftsmanship, authenticity, and passion!
