Bruichladdich Distillery is situated on the island of Islay in Scotland. Established in 1881 by the Harvey brothers, the distillery survived periods of uncertainty and was closed in 1994. It was reopened in 2001 by Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin and then Head Distiller, Jim McEwan, who breathed new life into the distillery and set out on a mission to create the world’s most thought-provoking spirits. In 2020, Bruichladdich became one of the only distilleries in the world, and the first Scotch whisky and gin distillery in Europe, to be B Corp certified.
Unique Characteristics
Terroir-Driven Approach: Bruichladdich embraces its Islay roots. The barley is sourced locally, and the distillery’s commitment to the island community shapes its ethos.
Slow Fermentation: Wooden washbacks allow for a slow fermentation, resulting in a cereal-forward flavor profile. Warm citrus, ripe peach, popcorn, and brown sugar dance on the palate.
Unpeated and Heavily Peated Expressions: Bruichladdich offers both unpeated and heavily peated whiskies, catering to diverse preferences.
Taste Profile
Unpeated: Fruity and floral, with notes of honey, vanilla, and orchard fruits. The spirit sings without the expected Islay smokiness.
Heavily Peated: Robust and smoky, with maritime influences. Think bonfires on the beach, iodine, and brine.
B Corp Status
B Corp Certified: In 2020, Bruichladdich became the first Scotch whisky and gin distillery in Europe to receive B Corp certification. This prestigious designation recognizes businesses committed to social and environmental performance.
To maintain certification, B Corps must recertify every three years. Bruichladdich not only retained its status but significantly improved its Impact Score by 21% since 2020.
Commitment to its community and refusal to outsource functions contribute to its status as the largest private employer on Islay. Sustainability pillars include energy, emissions, agriculture, biodiversity, packaging, waste, and community engagement.
Bruichladdich isn’t just whisky; it’s a force for good—a legacy that transcends the glass. 🥃🌿🌟
